# 19.     WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

COST EFFECTIVE “NUTS AND BOLTS”  HOSPITAL MICROBIOLOGY WORKSHOP

Offered  Saturday, February 23, 2008

Workshop fee included in your conference registration fee.

Dr. Dennis Wegner will show you how to apply the latest techniques, which can be used in hospitals of all sizes (including intermediate and smaller sized community hospitals), to provide high quality, patient orientated microbiology at minimum cost.  In fact, you will see how quality microbiology practices will increase prospective payment reimbursements and greatly help improve the hospital’s “bottom line”.

Participants will receive a copy of the CLSI / NCCLS-formatted Procedure Manual.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

(a)     Describe the importance of the Gram stain to evaluate mixed flora from wound and sputum cultures and to possibly optimize prospective payment reimbursements for bacterial pneumonia.

(b)     Identify blood culture techniques and communication protocols that increase sensitivity and optimize prospective payment for septicemia.

(c)     Discuss how broad spectrum microbiology antibiotic therapy active intervention can improve the hospital’s “bottom line” by reducing stays, improve patient care, and can increase technologist job satisfaction.

(d)     Discuss the insensitivity of  the throat specimen streptococcal rapid antigen testing.

(e)     Improve culture sensitivity and reduce confusion regarding urine cultures from long-term urinary catheter patients.

(f)      Understand adverse pregnancy outcomes due to bacterial vaginosis (BV) and quantitatively score (BV) Gram stains.

(g)     Cost effectively diagnose Giardia in-house.

Other topics  to be covered include:

·         MRSA’s – Where do they come from and how to get rid of them with inexpensive oral therapy alternatives to Vancomycin and Linezolid  (WMMD’s – Weapons of Mass MRSA Destruction)

·         Efficient cost and labor effective approaches for doing microbiology lab broad spectrum intervention

·         Improving Gram stain quality and clinical interpretation

·         Urinary tract infections and “go with the flow” urine culture and screening protocols

·         “Germs of Endearment” culture / microscopy for other STD’s

·         “Pneumonia – it’s more than an annoying cough”.  Gram stain directed management of patients with bacterial lung infections

·         Wounds, catheters, and anaerobic cultures

·         “ Stool school - the straight scoop on poop”
